Biography

  1. Who am I? 
  2. who am I in this society? the 2 questions I seek to find answers to on this journey.

“I share my life with those attentive as well as the indifferent. Using sound, text, film,photography, drawings, sculpture and installation… I build these archives.”

Immy Mali lives and works in Kampala. Her work revolves around notions of presence and absence, personal memories of childhood juxtaposed with current personal and collective narratives in Uganda and abroad. In Mali’s work, memory is a tool through which she describes the social (cultural and religious), political and economic landscape of Uganda not withholding post colonial and British imperial influences in the shaping of identities. Using a variety of media including, text, video, sound, sculpture, installation, animation, her work attempts to unpack the complexities and entanglements of memory and existence.Her ongoing project Letters to my childhood (2017-present) accords her the duality to engage with her past and present simultaneously.

    1. Hi Eca Eps, I appreciate your interest in my work and I’m honoured to know that you take time to revisit this site. About my experiences I’m not entirely sure how to respond as they are from different times on my clock and Im not quite sure which part you are interested in. about working in different contexts…I think its similar to experiencing different cultures. I have found myself often looking for an anchor point. for a familiar space to start from. viewing home from within and now from without gives me the opportunity to see what I wasn’t able to from close. we often say in Lunganda, “Basima ogenze”. which literally means “you are appreciated in your absence”
      i can probably say, the discomfort in unfamiliar spaces gives me a push but My desire for a while has been to speak a language that can be understood back home and maybe its what I search for.

We have a similar expression so I can certainly relate – especially in the context of your practice where you’re making work that is specific to a particular culture but being based elsewhere, and as such you might find yourself almost becoming an outsider looking in. Dear Immy, I heard about your problem with your artworks at the Rijksakademie, Linnemore asked if they good be placed at the Thami Mnyele Foundation. unfortunately we do not have a place for them. Are they very havy ? for which Museum do they need to stay in Europe? Can I help with writing a letter to them? all the best Pauline Burmann

    I am a visual artist currently curating an exhibition related to questions on migration, exile, and around the Babel myth in the framework of Esch2022 (European capital), in which I would very much like to include your work ‘Virtually Mine’
